قُلْ إِنِّي نُهِيتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ الَّذِينَ تَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ ۚ قُلْ لَا أَتَّبِعُ أَهْوَاءَكُمْ ۙ قَدْ ضَلَلْتُ إِذًا وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُهْتَدِينَ

Quran surah Al An’am 56 in english translation

Sahih International

(6:56) Say, “Indeed, I have been forbidden to worship those you invoke besides Allah.” Say, “I will not follow your desires, for I would then have gone astray, and I would not be of the [rightly] guided.”

Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan,

(6:56) Say (O Muhammad SAW): “I have been forbidden to worship those whom you invoke (worship) besides Allah.” Say: “I will not follow your vain desires. If I did, I would go astray, and I would not be one of the rightly guided.”

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

(6:56) Say: I am forbidden to worship those on whom ye call instead of Allah. Say: I will not follow your desires, for then should I go astray and I should not be of the rightly guided.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

(6:56) Say: “I am forbidden to worship those – others than Allah – whom ye call upon.” Say: “I will not follow your wain desires: If I did, I would stray from the path, and be not of the company of those who receive guidance.”

(6:56) Say: I am forbidden to serve those whom you call upon besides Allah. Say: I do not follow your low desires. for then indeed I should have gone astray and I should not be of those who go aright.

(6:56) Say, “Surely I am forbidden to worship the ones you invoke apart from Allah.” Say, “I do not ever follow your prejudices, (then) lo, I have already erred, and in no way would I be of the rightly- guided.”

(6:56) Say (to those associating partners with God): “I have been forbidden to worship those beings whom you deify and invoke apart from God.” Say: “I do not follow your lusts and fancies – or else I would go astray and would not be of those who are rightly guided.”

Amatul Rahman Omar

(6:56) Say, `I am strictly forbidden to worship those (false gods) whom you call upon besides Allâh.´ Say, `I do not follow your caprices. In that case I would have certainly become lost, and I would not have been of the guided ones.´

Literal

(6:56) Say: “That I, I was forbidden/prevented that I worship those who you call from other than God.” Say: “I do not follow your self attractions for desires I had then become misguided, and I am not from the guided.”

(6:56) Tell them: “I am forbidden to worship those you invoke apart from God.” And say: “I will not follow your wishes. If I do, I shall be lost and not be one of those who follow the right path.”
