وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُ اتَّقِ اللَّهَ أَخَذَتْهُ الْعِزَّةُ بِالْإِثْمِ ۚ فَحَسْبُهُ جَهَنَّمُ ۚ وَلَبِئْسَ الْمِهَادُ

Quran surah Al Baqarah 206 in english translation

Sahih International

(2:206) And when it is said to him, “Fear Allah,” pride in the sin takes hold of him. Sufficient for him is Hellfire, and how wretched is the resting place.

Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan,

(2:206) And when it is said to him, “Fear Allah”, he is led by arrogance to (more) crime. So enough for him is Hell, and worst indeed is that place to rest!

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

(2:206) And when it is said unto him: Be careful of thy duty to Allah, pride taketh him to sin. Hell will settle his account, an evil resting-place.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

(2:206) When it is said to him, “Fear Allah”, He is led by arrogance to (more) crime. Enough for him is Hell;-An evil bed indeed (To lie on)!

Mohammad Habib Shakir

(2:206) And when it is said to him, guard against (the punishment of) Allah; pride carries him off to sin, therefore hell is sufficient for him; and certainly it is an evil resting place.

Literal

(2:206) And if (it) was said to him: “Fear and obey God.” The glory/might took him with the sin/crime, so (it is) enough for him Hell and how bad (E), (are) the beds .

(2:206) Whenever he is told: “Obey God,” his arrogance leads him to more sin; and sufficient for him shall be Hell: How evil a place of wide expanse!
